Mahón, the principal port and town, lies at the east end of the island of Menorca. The approach to its sheltered harbour is via a three mile long, natural inlet which is one of Europe's best natural harbours - where the 18th century British Mediterranean fleet sheltered when Menorca was ruled from London (Admiral Nelson's visits are commemorated still by the local Nelson gin!). Menorca has an engaging charm perfectly embodied in the easily explored capital of Mahon with its attractive shops, outdoor market and the traditional Georgian buildings of its hilly old quarter. The life of Mahón centers on six squares. From the harbour, the Rampa de la Abundancia leads up to the Plaza de Espana, where market stalls line the arcades of the former Carmelite friary. The Town Hall and the church of Santa Maria both stand in the Plaza de la Constitucion. The Ateneo Cientifico houses a museum of natural history, archaeology and art.
Mahon's heritage also includes the invention of mayonnaise, the first distillation of gin from juniper berries, the mysterious 2,000-year old monoliths called taulas and a score of crescent-shaped beaches indenting the northern coast of the island. On the west coast lies Ciudadela, the island's former capital.
