West
Cruises... When the West family, the founders and owners of Cruise West,
began offering unique and personal travel experiences more than 60 years ago in
Alaska, a philosophy prevailed that remains true to this day: to provide
up-close travel that focuses on the destination -- its scenery, wildlife,
natural history and culture -- all in the company of limited numbers of
like-minded travelers.
Cruise West is American-owned and -flagged on six
of their eight vessels. The U.S.-flag status allows Cruise West to operate
unique routes that most other cruise lines cannot. While magnificent sweeping
views are certainly abundant in every one of Cruise West's destinations, it's
the glory of the details, viewed close up, that provide the most rewarding
memories -- an eagle in a tree on a tiny rocky islet, or the barnacles visible
on a humpback's fin.
Cruise West currently has eight ships in its fleet. The line's
flagship is the Spirit of Oceanus, which is an ocean-going 114-passenger
all-suite beauty. The 96-passenger Spirit of '98 was designed in the style of a
turn-of-the-century coastal steamer. The other "Spirit" ships, which explore
Alaska, British Columbia, the Columbia and Snake Rivers, California Wine
Country, and Baja California, are generally similar in size and style: Alaska
(78 passengers), Columbia (78 passengers), Discovery (84 passengers) and
Endeavour (102 passengers). The Sheltered Seas (70 passengers) is a touring
motor yacht (passengers stay on land each night), while the Pacific Explorer
(100 passengers) is similar in style to the "Spirit" ships and based in Central
America, exploring Costa Rica and Panama. |
